Transition and School Readiness Program

At Keilor Heights Primary School, we pride ourselves on offering a comprehensive Transition and School Readiness Program designed to help children feel confident, connected, and excited about starting school. Running throughout the year, the program provides a variety of opportunities for children and families to become familiar with our school environment, staff, and students.

The transition journey begins with visits to local kindergartens, where our staff and Year 6 student leaders engage with preschool children through storytelling and interactive activities.

During Terms 2 and 3, families are invited to attend our weekly Story Time and Music Makers sessions. These enjoyable and engaging sessions allow children to explore the school environment, participate in activities, and begin building positive connections with our staff and community.

In Term 4, the program becomes more structured to support a smooth transition into Foundation. Children participate in activities that introduce them to our Sound Waves phonics program, as well as our Literacy and Numeracy learning programs. These sessions also provide valuable opportunities for parents and carers to learn more about our teaching and learning approaches, ask questions, and gain practical advice on how to support their child’s learning at home.

The final stage of the program gives children the opportunity to spend time in their Foundation classroom with their teacher for the following year. During these sessions, they participate in a range of fun and engaging activities while becoming familiar with important areas of the school, including the playground and other key facilities.

Throughout the transition process, our senior students play an important role as buddies. They take the time to get to know the new Foundation students and provide support throughout the year, helping them settle into school life, navigate the playground, understand routines, and develop a strong sense of belonging from their very first day.

We recognise that every child is unique and may require different levels of support socially, emotionally, academically, and in developing independence. We value open communication with families and encourage parents and carers to share information about their child's individual needs so that we can work together to ensure a successful start to school.
